About the Part 1 Test
The new ADI Part 1 test went live on 23rd April 2003 and it is now a two part test taken on a touch screen computer. The same theory test centre will be used by new drivers
The first part of the test is a theory test consisting of 100 multiple choice questions. Each question has 4 possible answers, only 1 is correct. Candidates have 90 minutes to complete the ADI Theory Test. The questions are based on four areas of theory knowledge, but you don't need to know the details of these. You just need to correctly answer as many questions as you can. The majority of trainees have very little difficulty with the theory test.
The overall pass mark for the test is 85%. However, you must reach a minimum mark of 80% in each of the 4 subject areas. So you must get at least 20 out of 25 in each band. A score of 25, 25, 25 and 19 would give you 94% but would not be acceptable.
If you have prepared well for Part 1 you will know the answer when you read the question. So it should make little difference how many wrong answers you are faced with
The biggest change to the theory test is the inclusion of the Hazard Perception Test. The test will be the same as the one taken by new drivers. It will consist of 14 video clips. The 14 clips will contain 15 developing hazards. As the potential hazard develops into one requiring you to change speed or direction, you will have a time window in which to react. For each hazard you can score 5 points going down to zero. This gives a highest possible score of 75 for the test. The pass mark for potential driving instructors taking the part 1 will be 57
It is this test that causes trainees the most problems. Use the Focus CD Rom's, available below, to practice for this test. The clips on these CD Rom's are, in our opinion, more difficult than the real DSA clips. This makes them ideal preperation material for the test. You can obtain these discs using the links here. Both the theory and HPT parts of the test must be passed at the same time
ADI Part 1 Advice
There is no reason at all to spend a great deal of money on ADI part 1 training
Very many trainee instructors study for, and pass, the part 1 test by studying at home. It is perfectly possible to pass the part 1 ADI test for an initial outlay of as little as £30 plus the test fee, yet there are many training establishments who are happy to charge you as much as £600 for this part of your training!
A very high number of trainees spend anywhere from £2,500 to £3,000 for full training courses, but never get beyond the part 1 stage. Will they get a refund? Who knows . . . but why risk it? Study for part 1 yourself and you could save yourself literally thousands of pounds in wasted training fees
For as little as £30, you can pass part 1. Then you can obtain full training for part 2 and part 3 from us, for less than £1,800!
When you register with the DSA as Potential Driving Instructor (PDI), you will receive an information pack and the details of booking your part 1 test. You can also purchase the full ADI theory test question bank, complete with all the answers. Add to this a couple of books, the Focus series of CD Rom's for theory test and HPT practice, and the majority of trainees will have all they need to pass!

"After having failed my part 3 twice I felt it was now or never. When I contacted Dave for the first time I really felt he was concerned and took time to discuss my fears and ways in which to improve my instructing techniques. After six hours with Dave and Sharron it was an eye opening experience on how much was missing from my previous training; their personal approach made all the difference, particularly the night before my test!. Thanks so much to both Dave and Sharron for providing the missing ingredient. What a great Christmas present passing my part 3 was. I now feel I have a future!'' Kind regards and many thanks"
