The ADI Part 2 Test

The first part of the test is an eye sight test. It would be a good idea to make sure you can meet the requirements of this test before you commence and pay for any ADI training

We will insist that you undertake and pass the eyesight assessment with us before you are allowed to commence your part 2 training

You are required to read a car number plate with letters and figures 97.4mm high at a distance of no less than 27.5m, with the use of glasses or contact lenses if worn

If you fail to do this you will not be allowed to take the test

The test will last about an hour, and you will be required to drive on roads with varying speed limits and traffic volumes. This will include fast dual carriageway and or motorways. You will be expected to show that you can put into practice the principals of good driving and road safety

The examiner must be satisfied you have consistently demonstrated:

  • Expert handling of the controls
  • Use of correct road procedures
  • Anticipated the action of other road users and taken appropriate action
  • Sound judgment of distance, speed and timing
  • Consideration for the convenience and safety of other road users

You would also be required to perform any or all of the following manoeuvres

  • Move away straight ahead or at an angle
  • Overtake, meet and cross the path of other vehicles taking an appropriate course and without undue hesitancy
  • Turn left and right hand corners correctly without undue hesitancy
  • Stop the vehicle as in an emergency
  • Carry out a left and right reverse
  • Turn in the road exercise
  • Reverse parking exercise on the road

Just as with an "L" test, one serious fault or dangerous fault will result in failure. Compared to the "L" test, the part 2 is longer with more manoeuvres and a higher overall standard of driving is required. In terms of driving faults, you are allowed less than half the amount that would be acceptable on an "L" test

You'll find these reference books extremely valuable for your part 2 training. These are the books we recommend to our part 2 instructor trainees. 'Driving, The Essential Skills' is the official DSA reference book. 'The Driving Instructors Handbook' is a superb reference guide that you'll refer to throughout your training. Part 2 Advice

The DSA say this about Part 2 . . .

"This is not just a slightly more difficult "L" test. The test is of an advanced nature and a very high standard of competence is required"

Although the Part 2 test does require a significantly higher standard of driving than the "L" test, we believe it causes some confusion and fear by referring to it as being “of an advanced nature”

The test is based completely on the leaner driver syllabus, and you will need to show absolute proficiency in completing all of the pre set exercises

Whatever you do, do not ‘skimp’ at your part 2 training!

Traditionally, instructor trainers have encouraged trainees to rush part 2 and simply ‘pass the test’. By doing this, you are missing out on training that will prepare you thoroughly for the part 3 test of instructional ability

The most professional way to approach your training is to see the qualification process as one integrated learning experience. Your thoroughness in part 2 training could easily make the difference to your success in part 3, and will certainly prepare you to be a better instructor

We regularly help trainees from other training organisations who have significant problems at part 3. A great many of these can be directly attributed to poor quality training at the part 2 level

It is common for these trainees to wish that they could ‘turn back the clock ’ and commence their training with Dash!

Another Dash success story . . .

" . . . hi Dave, Just to say thanks for everything. I learnt so much in that short time. It was so nice to be working with someone who clearly enjoys what they do. I'm really excited about our future training for my pt 3 because I know I will ultimately be a better instructor for the experience . . . "
