There are many types of mobile speed detection systems. This is just a short introduction to one or two.

Muniquip

This hand held device is very common indeed, and is in use with many Police forces around the UK..Muniquip speed gun

It works in the same ways as a bigger fixed GATSO, and displays the speed on the back for the operator to see. The Police Officer then has to use his or her discretion in deciding whether to stop you or not. The recordings of speeds using this device are not permanent and no picture is taken, it is purely a device to tell the operator your speed at that moment in time. Most Police Forces tend to operate to a rule of allowing you the speed limit plus 10%. So, in a 30 mph zone, you may get prosecuted if you are driving at 34 mph. These figures are only a guide, and the individual officer can enforce the speed limit at any level they wish. We have known some forces where the traffic officers have not even stopped cars in a 30 mph area unless they were doing above 40 mph. However, you have been warned. These devices are very accurate indeed.

Riegl

It can be operated from various power supplies and it can be mounted on either a mono pod or a tripod, or a shoulder-stock can be attached to steady it in hand-held mode. It has a red-dot sighting system, which is aimed at the car and the light is reflected back, measuring the speed of the approaching vehicle.
