You can't drive a car or start your lessons until you have your provisional driving license AND you have reached the age of 17. If you are in receipt of the higher rate of disability, you can start to learn how to drive when you reach your 16th Birthday.

You can apply for your license 2 months before you are 17, but you MUST NOT drive on the road until the day of your 17th birthday.

If you have never held a driving license before you will need to apply for a provisional license. You must complete the driving license application form ‘D1' and a photocard application form ‘D750'. You can get these forms from most post offices. When you send them to the DVLA you need to remember to include the appropriate fee.

DVLA are introducing some new forms for driving license applications to make it simpler and to minimise the form filling you have to do.
If you manage to get hold of the new ‘D1' form it will have an area in the bottom left corner for you to attach your photograph, then a D750 form will not be required.

When you apply for your provisional license you need to send some form of proof of identity along with your completed form and license fee.

DVLA security checks on driving license applications have been tightened up since the introduction of photocard licenses. Learners who apply for driving licenses now need to submit original documentation confirming their identity.

The following documentation is accepted by DVLA as confirmation of your identity:

 Full Valid Current Passport 
 Birth Certificate
 Certificate of Registry of Birth (Provided your name is present on the certificate)
 Adoption certificate 
 ID Card issued by a member state of the EC/EEA 
 Travel Documents issued by the Home Office 
 Certificate of Naturalisation or Registration

If you don't want to send your original documents through the post, a premium service for checking photocard applications is available at selected post office branches. Your application form will be checked for you and your identity documents returned to you straight away. The premium service fee is £4 and is extra to the driving license fee that gets sent directly to the DVLA. Dash thoroughly recommend use of the premium service as you get your form checked for errors by someone independent and you get to keep all your personal documents.
